Broadcast Journalism

While The Oracle has the multimedia position, I noticed as an intro student that there was a severe lack of broadcast content. I intended to change that.

Without a team dedicated to broadcasting and a few points to reference on our actual site, it was a struggle to familiarize myself with the new skills needed for making broadcasts. Luckily, I wasn't afraid of using a camera or editing. I began to test out broadcasting as an intro student and therefore, I felt confident about starting off broadcasting the next year. Moreover, I included the various podcasts I've worked on thorughout my time in journalism.

Hardening vs. Softening Schools

As the Editorial Board had a journalism service project, we decided our theme would be the issue of gun violence in honor of the Uvalde shooting. During the research phase, we discovered a divide between school communities about what approach to take their school next: hardening versus softening. The debate between the hardening method of adding new security measures such as metal detectors versus the softening approach of teaching more social-emotional skills to students was something I wanted to highlight. Blending my design skills for the survey data with personable interviewing created a safe space for students to voice their opinions.

Live on the Fright Side

While Broadcast can be used to cover critical events happening in our world and localize them, sometimes they can also be light-hearted about our very own community.  Coincidentally, one of the school's beloved traditions was around the corner: Halloween. After getting permission to join the senior class in creating the senior haunted house, I combined my Adobe Preimer skills with creative cinematography and reporting to make an engaging piece about the event.

The Scoop: Senior Fountain Jump

Ever since I entered Archer in sixth grade, I've seen seniors jump into the star fountain in our school's courtyard on their very last day of academic classes, but I always wondered: where did this tradition come from? I interviewed three teachers and administrators who have worked at Archer since 2000 — thus celebrating their 23rd year at Archer — and discussed Archer's origins alongside this classic Archer tradition. Paired with this podcast was a photo gallery showcasing the seniors using water guns to spray their classmates and celebrate the end of their academic school year and the beginning of their final week as seniors.

The Scoop: Division Disconnection

After coming back from the pandemic in sophomore year, I was appalled by how disconnected the upper school and middle school was. Curious, I decided my first ever podcast on The Oracle would focus on asking: Where does the disconnect between division stem from? How can people of different age group connect, especially after a global pandemic? This podcast blends together interviews with teachers and students on campus with a school wide survey I conducted to gauge what the student body thought about the other division.
